By Mr. David Bowers
What were you doing in Lubbock in May 1970?
I was a Tech student working full time at W. D. Wilkins.
What do you remember from the night of May 11, 1970?
The storm stopped 2 blocks from our rent house on 32nd that day/night. We got into the bath tub and placed a mattress over us until the train like noise ceased. For some reason our phone worked and the students from our home town could call their parents.
As the day wore on we found out that one of our store Managers, Dale (Mac) McLintock, was missing. The 2nd day we all went to the Country Club North subdivision and his home was leveled. We all started the cleanup. During this we found Mac who had been missing 2 days underneath the roof edge. It was very sad. As I worked I found their wedding rings and watches which had been placed on their dresser when they went to bed. Mac died opening his cellar door and shoving his family down into the cellar but by hanging on the the door to do that the storm ripped the door and him into the air. I will never forget how all the employees helped the recovery.
What was your reaction to the destruction you saw in the days following the storm? Did the storm damage your home, workplace, or school?
There were three stormsthat they said hit. Don't really know but the destruction was mind boggling. I will never forget the Fields building they had recently built and what it did to it.
Did you know anyone who was injured or killed by the tornado?
Dale (Mac) McLintock
How did the tornado experience change you? How did it change the City of Lubbock?
